Description

In 2006 sculptor Sergey Kazantsev presented the portrait of St. Sergius of Radonezh to the Trinity-Sergius Varnitsky Monastery (Yaroslavl region, Rostov district). This Monastery is based on the birthplace of the Great Holy Land of Russia. The sculptural portrait is located in the building of the Orthodox Gymnasium located on the territory of the Monastery.

Next 2007 Sergey Kazantsev devoted himself entirely to the study of the Saint's biography. The sculptor saw the necessity to create the Sergius of Radonezh monument in his homeland. This monument will help to realize the significance of the greatest of Russian Saints. The idea was as follows:

On the axis of the Yaroslavl highway, five hundred meters before the turn to Varnitsy, in the city of Rostov, which 700 years ago was the spiritual center of Russian Orthodoxy, a sculptural image of St. Sergius of Radonezh must stand. Viewing the sculpture will be possible for one-two kilometers from the highway from Moscow, and from the northern trains passing. In point of this, the size of the figure is necessary at least 12 meters from white stone, symbolizing the purity of the image of the Holy. White stone is organic for old Russian sculpture. The figure will stand on a six-meter high pedestal, decorated with natural northern stone. Pilgrims can rise to the feet of St. Sergius by an inclined ramp. On the right side you can see the Rostov Kremlin, and on the left Varnitsky monastery, based on the birthplace of St. Sergius. On the reverse side of the pedestal will be located the entrance to the monument and the entrance to the museum. The museum will be located inside the pedestal. The exposition of the museum will tell about the earthly journey of the Igumen of the Russian Land and his followers.
