Description

Muse Melpomene of the Ura

Melpomene in ancient Greek mythology was one of the nine Mousai (Muses), the goddess of music, song, and dance. In the Classical era, when the Mousai were assigned specific artistic and literary spheres, Melpomene was named Muse of tragedy. In her appearance, she is portrayed holding a tragic mask in one hand and sword or club in the other.

"Muse of Melpomene" by sculptor Sergey Kazantsev, symbolizing the integration of stage creativity and is supplemented with the attributes of her sisters - a comedy mask from Thalia and a harp from Terpsichore. The sculptor brought a marble block two and a half meters tall from the Ural marble deposits along with a boulder for a stand. In 1993, he donated this piece of art to the park of Istra city. For a long time, the monument stood in the park near the Istra Municipal Drama Theater, and later, fearing acts of vandalism, Muse was moved insides the walls of the theater for protection.
